Motorway Driving

Motorway driving can be intimidating for new drivers, but with the right knowledge and practice, it can become a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here's your comprehensive guide to mastering motorway driving.

Before You Start

Before entering the motorway, ensure your vehicle is in good condition. Check your tires, fuel level, and make sure all lights are working. Plan your route in advance and be aware of any roadworks or diversions.

Joining the Motorway

The slip road is your entry point to the motorway. Use it to build up speed to match the flow of traffic. Check your mirrors and blind spots before merging. Remember, traffic on the motorway has priority, so adjust your speed accordingly.

Lane Discipline

Stay in the left lane unless overtaking. The middle and right lanes are for overtaking only. After overtaking, return to the left lane. This helps maintain smooth traffic flow and reduces congestion.

"Remember: The left lane is your default position. Only move to other lanes when overtaking."

Safe Following Distance

Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. The two-second rule is a good guideline: when the vehicle in front passes a fixed point, count two seconds before you reach the same point. In wet conditions, increase this to four seconds.

Speed Management

Keep to the speed limit and adjust your speed according to conditions. Remember that the national speed limit on motorways is 70 mph, but this may be reduced in certain areas or during poor weather conditions.

Dealing with Fatigue

Long journeys can be tiring. Take regular breaks every two hours. If you feel tired, pull over at the next service station. Never drive when you're feeling drowsy.
